Overview
(1) Background and trends on digital mobile communication systems (2 hours)
Modern development of digital & mobile systems and spectrum allocation
Revision on fundamentals: BER, SNR, capacity etc
(2) Baseband digital communication (6 hours)
Pulse shaping and matched filtering
Channel coding for reliable transmission
Nyquist criterion for distortion-less transmission
Intersymbol interference and principles of equalisation
(3) Bandpass digital communication (4 hours)
Basic modulation schemes: PSK, FSK and QAM, and error rate performance
Advanced modulation schemes: Offset QPSK, p/4-DQPSK, MSK, GMSK
OFDM
(4) Mobile radio propagation and Diversity (4 hours)
Path loss & shadowing
Link budget & noise figure calculation
Multipath fading effect
Diversity and combining techniques
(5) Multiple access techniques (4 hours)
FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, and OFDMA
(6) Cellular network design (4 hours)
Frequency reuse planning & signal-to-interference calculation
Channel assignment schemes & handoff strategies
Traffic calculation & capacity enhancement techniques

Aims

The unit aims to:
- Provide a fundamental knowledge on digital & mobile communication systems in the physical layer, medium access control layer and network layer, with more emphasis on the physical and MAC layer.
- Develop a good understanding on the fundamentals of digital communication
- Introduce the fundamentals about channel coding and error control mechanisms
- Understand the nature of wireless communication channel, especially channel fading
- Introduce the cellular system design methodology.
