BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy / Course details

Course description

Our BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy course will give you the skills you need to register with the General Dental Council as a dental therapist or dental hygienist.

The course takes a holistic approach to primary dental care. You will be trained to undertake a number of clinical procedures, such as periodontal treatment, simple fillings, dental radiographs and the extraction of primary teeth.

You will also develop excellent communication skills to motivate and encourage patients to develop good oral health habits.

We guarantee interviews on the BDS course for those students who have performed exceptionally well in the final year of the Dental Hygiene and Therapy course at The University of Manchester. Details of this scheme are published internally for eligible students.

Teaching and learning

You will complete your practical work in settings such as hospital departments and community dental outreach clinics.

We use a variety of learning and teaching methods on the course, including lectures, small-group seminars, enquiry-based learning and practical classes, including anatomy on cadavers alongside our Dentistry students.

Coursework and assessment

You will be assessed through written essays, practical assessments, short-answer tests, multiple choice tests, specimen identification and project presentations. You must also complete an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Course content for year 1

You will gain the knowledge and skills to begin to manage patients in a clinical setting. You will cover:

  • basic sciences
  • human diseases
  • general dentistry
  • behavioural sciences
  • basic clinical skills, including patient contact.

Course content for year 2

You will build on the clinical skills you developed in Year 1 by studying dental radiography and restorative dentistry.

Course content for year 3

You will focus on integrating the clinical skills you have developed so far with more complex treatment plans. You will also undertake a critically appraised topic.

We guarantee interviews on the BDS course for those students who have performed exceptionally well in the final year of the Dental Hygiene and Therapy course at The University of Manchester. Details of this scheme are published internally for eligible students.
