In April 2016 Manchester eScholar was replaced by the University of Manchester’s new Research Information Management System, Pure. In the autumn the University’s research outputs will be available to search and browse via a new Research Portal. Until then the University’s full publication record can be accessed via a temporary portal and the old eScholar content is available to search and browse via this archive.

Abstract

The Bedyngham song normally known as Gentil madonna was one of the most successful musical works of the 1440s. The Codex Speciálník in Hradec Kralové, from after 1490, contains a version that -- when disentangled -- adds a florid higher voice and a lower voice to Bedyngham's Discantus and Tenor. The style of the top voice raises again the old and still unresolved questions of an instrumental style in the music of the fifteenth century.
