Abstract
Urban health is important due to urbanisation, and it requires specific information not captured bynational datasets. The EURO-URHIS (www.urhis.eu) project funded by DG SANCO, identifiedexisting urban health indicators and their availability. EURO-URHIS 2 aims to develop methodologyand validated tools useful to policymakers at all levels, to assist them in making health gains viaevidence based policy decisions for urban populations.The data is being collected using surveys of existing sources, eliciting the priorities of policymakersin terms of policies and interventions for their urban area and an individual survey covering lifestyleand environment. Data collected will be validated and analysed to develop the specific tools forpolicymakers to use. The meta-data collected will form the context to identifying trends in policy,assessing major health problems and investigating the link between the two. Differences in healthindicators could be compared for benchmarking and to make changes. The opinions of policymakersregarding the tools will also be evaluated. Collaboration with policymakers, researchers and civilsociety will take place through a number of activities including consultation during the developmentstage, training workshops and a final conference.Dissemination will be multi-modal, coordinated through websites in formats adapted to differentuser-groups. The training of doctoral and post-doctoral students is ensuring a pool of new researchersinterested in this expanding field. At all stages, stakeholders are being consulted.The project objectives are:• to collect data at UA level;• to provide tools for evidence based policy;• to develop methods for cross-sectional and longitudinal assessment for urban population healthincluding all relevant determinants of health;• to validate these tools and methods by using existing population-based registries and databases;• to apply the tools in the field, ensuring they are easy and intuitive to use by policymakers.
