In April 2016 Manchester eScholar was replaced by the University of Manchester’s new Research Information Management System, Pure. In the autumn the University’s research outputs will be available to search and browse via a new Research Portal. Until then the University’s full publication record can be accessed via a temporary portal and the old eScholar content is available to search and browse via this archive.

Abstract

Lightvessels is the third in my series of works that explores maritime soundworlds (following Buoy and Moorings). Lightvessels are unmanned ships that are moored at sea, acting as floating lighthouses, fog horns and weather stations (BBC radio 4 listeners are familiar with the Channel Lightvessel Automatic - one of the reporting weather stations on the dailiy shipping forecast). This work suggests interior and external soundworlds, actions and spaces: the ship’s hull, automated functions, warning sounds and surroundings.
