Abstract
Their project for the 13th Istanbul BiennialShorting the Long Position (2013) is partof The Nordenskiöld Model, an ongoingexperiment in theatrical finance. It takes itsname from the Finnish mineralogist AugustNordenskiöld, and carries a Swedishking’s 18th century dream of alchemy intothe contemporary moment. The dream ofthe scientist, who was supported bythe King to guarantee financial superiorityover Russia, was to give everyoneaccess to gold, putting an end to thepower of money. Goldin+Senneby,working together with actors, computerexperts, playwrights, economists, andfinancial experts, seek an algorithmicfinancial reality that functions through thecollectively produced play and partakesin a real economy. The biennial exhibitionwill feature an actor rehearsing a scenewritten by the playwright Jo Randerson.Meanwhile the production budget will gointo a financial trading strategy developedby cultural economist İsmail Ertürk. Fromthe opening day onwards, the financialperformance of the trading will determinethe duration of the actor’s contract. Theperformance will last as long as the moneysuffices. The project’s traces, meanwhile,will extend as far into the stock market assmartphones do
