Abstract

The development of ion extn. methods under electrochem. control via electrochem. at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solns. is discussed. A hydrodynamic flow injection system was used for the potentiostatic extn. of nonredox-active species from a flowing aq. phase into a stationary organogel phase. The ions tetraethylammonium, 4-octylbenzenesulfonate (4-OBSA-), and p-toluenesulfonate (p-TSA-) were studied as model analytes. The extn. study comprised examn. of the influence of extn. potentials, aq.-phase flow rate, and target species concn. The extn. process can be monitored in situ by the ion-transfer current, which has opposing signs for anions and cations. Hydrodynamic voltammograms were obtained from these expts. The selective extn. of 4-OBSA-, from its mixt. with p-TSA-, as well as coextn. of both anions is shown. The results demonstrate the utility of electrochem. modulation for the controlled extn. of ions from an aq. phase into an organogel electrolyte phase. This offers potential benefits for various anal. processes including sample prepn. and cleanup. [on SciFinder (R)]
