As a postgraduate research student in Law at Manchester, you will be fully immersed in our strong research culture and reputation.

Academic support
Throughout your time with us, you will be assigned two supervisors to help guide your work and provide pastoral care.
Supervision includes regular personal sessions and an annual review meeting at which you present details of your progress to a panel of senior academic staff.
Supervisors will normally be allocated from within The University of Manchester Law School. However, creating supervisory teams with scholars in other sections of the University is also possible.
Funding
Many of our research students are funded by studentships, scholarships and assistantships, and Faculty studentships, all of which cover the full payment of tuition fees and usually include an additional stipend living allowance.
Law is a member of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) doctoral training centre and approved by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to award funded research council studentships.
Libraries and study spaces
Studying at Manchester offers you access to one of the best libraries in the country, as well as a wide variety of web-based resources.
Within the department, we have dedicated office space for our researchers, which includes networked PCs and access to the University's research facilities.

One of the greatest benefits to our research students is the dynamic and stimulating learning environment provided by our research hubs, which host many of the UK’s leading experts in their specialist area of research.
Peer support
Your fellow researchers will come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds.
Medical doctors, philosophers, lawyers, sociologists, all bringing different areas of expertise and perspectives that enrich discussions.
Within the department, a postgraduate research conference is held once a year, bringing staff and research students together to gain presentation experience and engage in public debate about their research.
Seminars and lectures
You'll be encouraged to attend research workshops and seminars, and may also be asked to present work-in-progress sessions on your own research.
Many of our researchers also teach and opportunities to become a Teaching Assistant come up each semester.
Training
The opportunities to develop yourself throughout your research studies are plentiful.
Specialist training for Humanities' researchers run throughout the year, with courses to develop your skills in project management, presentations, writing research proposals and much more.
As a research student at Manchester, you will also be part of the University's Manchester Doctoral College which offers training, development, support and guidance to researchers from every subject.
