World War I

World War I had a profound impact on The University of Manchester. Through our students, staff and research, the University made a significant contribution to the war effort.

To mark the 100-year anniversary of the conflict, we’ve launched a website commemorating the events of 1914–18, recognising the impact of the war and the diverse contribution made by the University’s people.

You can discover stories about the impact of war on the University, including letters sent to Professor Thomas Frederick Tout by students serving in the war. You can also view a roll of honour commemorating those staff and students who lost their lives as a result of war, with profiles detailing their lives and achievements added each month.
