Biography

Gus qualified in surgery, MBChB, MD(Honours) at Glasgow, and in Bioengineering (M.Sc) at Strathclyde. He is a FRCS (England, Glasgow and Edinburgh). He was appointed to the first UK chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and was recruited from UCL to develop the University Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Research Group.

Gus has an active surgical practice at the University of South Manchester Hospital which facilitates two-way translation of knowledge between laboratory and patients. He has developed a large laboratory activity, recruiting the Blond McIndoe Research group and Professor Giorgio Terenghi, with whom Gus jointly supervises several fields of tissue repair research relevant to reconstructive surgery. Gus provides a national ‘research hub’ acting as mentor or adviser for Reconstructive Surgery research fellows at many centres: RESTORE and Plastic Surgery Research Trust, University of Oxford and UCL. He is active in fundraising and research direction for numerous national charities.

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and held a personal research merit award from the Royal Society. HRH Philip, Duke of Edinburgh attended his public lectures, 1989, 1995 and 2002. He has delivered numerous public lectures and acted as a media spokesman on issues such as ‘Disfigurement-The Last Bastion of Discrimination. Gus is Clinical Director of MIMIT (Manchester Integrating Medicine and Innovative Technology). He is a Council Member and Trustee of the Royal College of Surgeons.
