Role
Director, The University of Manchester Biomedical Imaging Institute
I am the Director of the University of Manchester Biomedical Imaging Institute (BII). The Institute is designed to foster and promote basic and applied imaging-based research in the biomedical area, and spans activity throughout the University.
QBI Laboratory
I head the Quantitative Biomedical Imaging Lab (QBI Lab) within the Centre for Imaging Sciences. The QBI Lab focuses on quantitative MRI characterization of tumour microstructure and physiology and lung imaging. We have also been involved in quantitative imaging in inflammatory conditions and in quantitative musculoskeletal morphological imaging. Our research is a mix of methodological innovation and collaborative research projects with clinicians and industry. We currently enjoy funding from the pharmaceutical industry, Cancer Research UK, and research councils, with on-going research projects in:
- Quantitative DCE-MRI in oncology
- Tracer kinetic modeling methods
- Image registration
- Tumour growth patterns
- Tumour oxygenation
- Proton MRI functional lung imaging
The QBI Lab has also participated in a number of phase I clinical trials of anti- angiogeneic and antivascular agents using DCE-MRI in the quantification of tumour microvascular function.
Unit of Neuroimaging and Tractography
I am a member of the Unit of Neuroimaging and Tractography (UNIT), with an active research portfolio in neuroimaging focussing on the development of diffusion MRI tractography methods and thier application to a range of conditions. Current areas of research include the optimised combination of diffusion MRI tractography with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the characterisation of cerebral connectivity.
Bioxydyn Limited
I am director of a University of Manchester spin out company, Bioxydyn Limited. The company is developing new diagnostic imaging tools for lung diseases and provides an advanced imaging biomarkers contract research service.
Teaching
I teach on the Physics of Medical Imaging module run in the School of Physics. I also teach on MSc and other postgraduate courses.
