I first came to Manchester in 1987 to study for a degree in Chemistry. After that, I stayed to do a Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. V.J. Robinson. The subject of my Ph.D. was the interaction of humic substances with metal ions, which involved both laboratory work and theoretical modelling. Following my Ph.D., I undertook a 3 year, NERC funded post-doc under the joint supervision of Drs. F.R.Livens and M.N. Jones in the Department of Chemistry and the School of Biological Sciences. This work involved the study of the colloidal properties of humic substances, and the effect of metal binding. In 1997, I started work on a joint European Commission and U.K. Environment Agency project studying the effect of humic substances upon the transport and migration of radionuclides, particularly the actinides, in the environment. This work was carried out in association with RM Consultants Ltd., Abingdon, and under the joint supervision of Dr. F.R. Livens and Prof. C.D. Curtis in the Departments of Chemistry and Earth Science. In September 1999, I was appointed as a lecturer in the new Centre for Radiochemistry Research at Manchester.
