Peter studied Modern Languages (French, German) with Politics at Bristol Polytechnic (now the University of West of England), during which time he also obtained a DiplÃme d?Ã?tudes FranÃaises from the University of Caen, France. Subsequently, Peter completed a Master's degree in West European Politics at the LSE and obtained his PhD - on the subject of Pluralism and the Mass Media - from Bradford University, where he spent a period as a research assistant between 1984-1986. Since then, he has been at Manchester as Lecturer (1986-92), Senior Lecturer (1992-97), Reader (1997-2001) and Professor (since 2001).

Peter is a member of the Political Studies Association (PSA), the International Association for the Study of German Politics (IASGP ), the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES), the Standing Group on Regulation of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), the International Communications Association (ICA), and the European Communication Research and Eductaion Association (ECREA).

Peter is currently (elected) Chair of the Communciations Law and Policy Division of the International Communications Association (ICA) and between 2009-2010 served as its (elected) Vice Chair. Since 2007 he has also served as founding Vice-Chair of the Communications Law and Policy section of the European Communication Research and Education (ECREA) (confirmed by election in 2008).

He has been involved with several European research networks, including a longstanding relationship with the Hans-Bredow-Institute at the University of Hamburg, Germany. B1988 and 2001 he was a Fellow of the European Institute for the Media. Between 2006 -2008 he was a Member of the International Scientific Council of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR)-Democracy (a majpr inter-disciplinary research programme in communication and politics). He is currently a member of an international research team: the Media and Democracy Monitor project (coordinated by Professor Josef Trappel, Univerrsity of Salzburg).

Peter Humphreys has published extensively on his area of research specialism, namely comparative media and telecommunications policy: five authored or co-authored books, three edited collections, and numerous scholarly articles, book chapters, and contributions in handbooks, textbooks and scholarly encyclopaedias. He has been invited to present papers on his research at numerous international venues, including the Universities of Mannheim, Dortmund, Duesseldorf, Hohenheim (Stuttgart) and Wilhelmshaven in Germany, the University of California at Berkeley and the New School (NYC) in the USA, the Universities of Montreal and McGill in Canada, the Free University Brussels in Belgium, the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain, and the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

Since 1996, Peter has directed (principal Investigator) two major 3 year ESRC research projects on different aspects of media policy and he has been co-investigator on a 3-year ESRC project on telecommunications policy.
