Timothy Insoll is Professor of African and Islamic Archaeology at the University of Manchester. He joined the University of Manchester as a Lecturer in 1999, was made Senior Lecturer and then Reader in 2004, and awarded a personal Chair in 2005. Previously, (1992-1998) he was a PhD student and then a Research Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge, and an Undergraduate (1989-1992) at the University of Sheffield. He is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Asiatic Society. He has completed extensive archaeological fieldwork in Ghana, Mali, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Western India, and Bahrain (see
