Currently supervises four doctoral students in various aspects of educational and 20th century British and American theatre and in performance as a learning medium in museums and historic sites.
December 2004: Awarded Major Research Grant by the Arts & Humanities Research Council to investigate the uses and impact of performance as a medium of learning in museums and historic sites: Performance, Learning and Heritage, July 2005-September 2008. An interdisciplinary project based in the Centre for Applied Theatre Research, in partnership with the Centre for Museology and Manchester Museum.
April 2002: Awarded Research Grant by the Wellcome Trust to research the current and potential uses of the performing arts in developing awareness among young people of new developments and issues in bio-medicine and bio-technology, in order to inform the planning of a new programme of performing arts grant-aid by the Trust. May - September 2002. (£18,000)
May 2001: Awarded Major Research Grant by the Arts & Humanitie s Research Board to investigate the effectiveness of theatre and theatre techniques in museums and heritage sites, July 2001-June 2002. (£32,000)
March 2000: Awarded Small Research Grant by the Arts & Humanitie s Research Board for an audience research project in Autumn 2000/Spring 2001. (£2,200)
Board member of M6 Theatre Company Ltd (professional community, touring and young people's theatre company, based in Rochdale); chair of company's Artistic & Educational Committee.
Has been External Examiner of PhD degrees at the Universities of Exeter, Bristol , Leeds, Leicester and Durham, and Griffith University ( Brisbane , Australia ) and Ohio State University (USA).
Has been External Examiner for MA in Performance, University of Leeds : Bretton Hall, 2002-5; MA in Drama & Theatre Studies, University of Warwick, 2002-6; and MA in Cultural Performance, University of Bristol, 2003-7.
