Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Information Management Group in the School of Computer Science of The University of Manchester

I hold the following degrees, a B.Sc. (I) in Economics (Rio de Janeiro, 1984), an M.Sc. (with distinction) in Knowledge-Based Systems (Edinburgh, 1990) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science (Heriot-Watt, 1995).

Since joining the University of Manchester, I have been awarded around ten research grants from the UK  research councils and from the European Comission.

From 1974 to 1989 I held several positions in the information technology industry in Brazil.

I worked as a Research Associate in the Database Research Group of the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University from December 1990 until December 1995 in several research projects in the areas of spatial, active and deductive object-oriented databases

Between January 1996 and August 1998 I was a Lecturer in Computer Science in the Department of Computing at Goldsmiths College, University of London where I worked on adaptive hyperlink-based systems.

In September 1998 I joined the School of Computer Scence as a Lecturer in Information Systems. In August 2005 I was promoted to Senior Lecturer.

An invitation by ScienceCareers (then called Next Wave), a weekly online publication that covers scientific training, career development, and the science job market, published by SCIENCE magazine and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, resulted in this potted life story, which adds background colour to the above facts.
