I studied Politics and History at Loughborough University before doing a MA in Political Behaviour at Essex and writing a PhD on spatial variation in economic attitudes and voting behaviour at the University of Sheffield.

My first full-time academic job was as Lecturer in Politics at the University of Leeds, and I came to Manchester in 1994.

I am co-editor (with Steve de Wijze) of the journal Representation

I was made a Professor in July 2011

I was awarded  the Bernard Crick Prize for Outstanding Teaching made by the Political Studies Association in 2012

I became Head of Politics in 2012
