Biography

I received my undergraduate degree in American Studies from the University of East Anglia in 1984 and a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge in 1995. Before taking up the chair in American Studies at Manchester in May 2006, I taught in the history departments at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1990-2000) and at the University of Florida (2000-2006), where I also served as department chair from 2003-5.
