Dr David Cullen - personal details
I am currently a senior lecturer in the Nuclear Physics Research group in the School of Physics and Astronomy.
I obtained a first-class honours Physics degree from the Unviversity of Liverpool in 1988. In 1991 I obtained a Nuclear Physics PhD at the University of Liverpool.
From 1991-1993 I was a research fellow at Oak Ridge National Lab., TN, USA and in 1993-1995 I was a teaching fellow at the University of Rochester, NY, USA. From 1995-1998 I was a research associated at the University of Liverpool. From 1998-2003 I was an EPSRC Advanced Fellow and since 2000 I have been at the University of Manchester. In 2008 I spent a sabbatical research year at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland.
I have given 35 invited international talks and published ~200 refereed papers in leading international journals.
International Public Service Positions
UK Representative of the European Gammapool (2003-Present): This international committee is composed of 6 representatives from the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden. The objective of the Gammapool network is to improve the coordination of the ?30M European detector resource and complementary equipment used for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. These resources are available to the European nuclear physics community for world-class experimental campaigns at major accelerator laboratories offering unique new physics opportunities. Based on the scientific merit of the proposed campaigns, Gammapool decides where these detectors will be situated in Europe to maximise the output and maintain the strength of the European nuclear physics community. See http://gammapool.lnl.infn.it/
UK Representative of the European Euroball Detector Owner's Committee (EBOC) 2003: This international committee was composed of 6 representatives from the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden. The objective of the EBOC was to coordinate the ?30M European detector resource and complementary equipment used for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy in Europe.
UK Representative of the European Euroball Infrastructure Group (EIG) (1999-2002): My role in this committee was to manage the UK's infrastructure issues associated with running the ?30M Euroball detectors when they were located in Strasbourg, France and Legnaro, Italy. The committee comprised of representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Denmark and Sweden.
Membership of National Professional Bodies
Member of the Institute of Physics.
Chairman of the UK Nuclear Physics Forum (2005-2007): This body was set up to coordinate the UK Nuclear Physics research community in order to broaden the remit of the UK Gamma-ray Users Group (GRUG), see http://nuclear1.paisley.ac.uk/npf/termsofreference.html
Chairman of the UK Gamma-Ray User's Group (GRUG) (2003-2004): This body was responsible for the coordination of the UK nuclear physics research in the area of gamma-ray spectroscopy.
Professional Body Membership
Honorary Secretary and Treasurer to the Institute of Physics (IOP) Nuclear Physics Group (NPG) (2005-2008): The NPG's role is to help the Institute support physics research and its application and provides a forum for meeting and discussion. See http://www.iop.org/activity/groups/subject/np/index.html
Honorary Member of the Institute of Physics Nuclear and Particle Division (2005-2008): The IOP divisions sit above the IOP Groups and provide an opportunity for cross group communication and organise conferences across disciplines. The Nuclear and Particle Physics Division maintains an overview of all areas of physics associated with Nuclear and Particle Physics and reviews developments in the field. See http://www.iop.org/activity/groups/division/npp/index.html
Member of EPSRC College (1998-2009).
