John works as a senior lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work and leads the Mental Health Research group in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.

John qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in 1995 and completed the B Nurs (hons) at The University of Manchester in 1996. He has worked in a variety of inpatient settings including acute and low secure rehabilitation, during this time he completed a part-time MSc in Psychosocial Interventions at the University of Sheffield.  Whilst seconded from clinical practice to The University of Manchester to work on the 'Addressing Acute Concerns Research Project' he completed an MPhil, which lead to the development of the Attitudes Towards Acute Mental Health (ATAMH [33]) scale.  In 2003, John was appointed lecturer in Mental Health Nursing.  In 2007, he completed an externally funded PhD entitled 'Enhancing the use of ‘as required’/‘extra’ (PRN) medication in acute mental health settings'. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2012.
