After studying at the University of Birmingham, I was awarded a Polish Government Scholarship to study Composition at the Academy of Music in Warsaw in 1971 with Andrzej Dobrowolski, and it was at this time that I began a long and close association with Witold LutosÅawski and his music. I have written a number of articles about LutosÅawski's music, and contributed a chapter (The Visionary and the Dramatic in the Music of Witold LutosÅawski) in LutosÅawski Studies (ed. Zbigniew Skowron) published by OUP.

After Lectureships at the universities of Birmingham and Durham I came to Manchester as Professor of Music in 1992.
