After a BSc in Zoology at University College London I concentrated on Immunology. I did a PhD at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, Surrey, investigating immunological memory in the gut and then spent four years at the National Institute for Medical Research working on the function of B lymphocytes before taking up a lectureship in Immunology at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, where I was based at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, looking into the function of B lymphocyte subpopulations and their particular role in rheumatic diseases, while running immunology courses for preclinical medical and intercalating BSc students.
I came to Manchester for family reasons and worked for a short time on the expression of inflammatory cytokine genes in a model of osteoarthritis. After that I had a gap for a few years while I did a PGCE and taught Biology in further education colleges, before joining a research group at the University of Leeds to investigate the function of gamma delta T lymphocytes in infection.
I've been back at the University of Manchester for several years as a teaching-focussed lecturer, running the distance learning MSc in Immunology and Immunogenetics and the preclinical medical course in Evidence-Based Medicine.
