The encouragement of enterprise is a critical aspect of the University's culture. Commercialisation and exploitation of our intellectual property (IP) is therefore a fundamental part of our activity.
The University of Manchester I3 Ltd (UMI3) is the University’s innovation company. UMI3 has two operational divisions: its Innovation Centre (UMIC) with state-of-the-art incubator premises and a vibrant enterprise conferencing and networking centre, and its intellectual property commercialisation service (UMIP).
The mission of UMI3 is to bring the University’s ground-breaking inventions and software into the commercial world. This is done principally by attracting entrepreneurs, investors and corporate venture partners to our campus and innovation centre, and then licensing or spinning out companies through engagement with our academic colleagues.
Case study booklets, which include examples of this and the transfer of intellectual property through licensing, are available to download on the UMIP website.
