Biography

My undergraduate degree was in Cultural Studies at the University of Portsmouth (with specialisms in film and media studies, literature and cultural theory), followed by my PhD at the Dept. of Cultural Studies and Sociology, University of Birmingham. Before my Lectureship in Screen Studies at Manchester I was Research Fellow in Sociology at the University of Portsmouth. I also gained my PGCHE from the University of Portsmouth.

Professional Achievements

Since my appointment at Manchester in 2002 I have taken up senior posts as Director of Centre for Screen Studies and as Head of Dept of Drama (2007-2010).

I have been invited to present as Keynote Lecturer in the areas of my work at the Universities of Vienna, Stirling, Fraser Valley, British Columbia, University Technology Sydney, and at the Brunei Gallery (London).

In May 2013 I was awarded the titles of 'Best Humanities Lecturer' and overall 'Lecturer of the Year' by the students' vote in the University of Manchester Students' Union Teaching Awards.

In 2011 I was Visiting Scholar at the National University of Singapore and at the University of Technology Sydney, and Visiting Professor at the Center for Humanities, Temple University, USA.

In 2010 I was honored by the Triangle Media Group, UK, with a 'Top 50 Global South Asian Achiever Award' in the category of Education for my academic, knowledge transfer and outreach work on South Asian popular culture and popular Hindi cinema. Other recipients of the award include AR Rahman (Oscars Award winner and music composer for Slumdog Millionaire) and Professor Amartya Sen (Nobel Memorial Prize winner in Economic Sciences).
