Fees

Fees for entry in 2027 have not yet been set. For reference, the fees for the academic year beginning September 2026 were as follows:

  • MSc (part-time)
    UK students (per annum): £6,850
    International, including EU, students (per annum): £18,100
  • PGDip (full-time)
    UK students (per annum): £10,900

  • PGDip (part-time)
    UK students (per annum): £5,450
    International, including EU, students (per annum): £14,500
  • PGCert (full-time)
    UK students (per annum): £5,500

  • Modular (part-time)
    UK students (per annum): £1,400 per 15 credits

The fees quoted above are fully inclusive of tuition, administration and computational costs.

Fees for entry are subject to yearly review. The University reserves the right to increase your tuition fee by up to 7% each year for courses lasting more than one year, including to reflect rising costs associated with delivering our educational and wider student experience. International student CAS deposit

Self-funded international applicants are required to pay a deposit of £2500 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. Some applicants will be required to pay a higher deposit. More information on tuition fee deposits .

Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Overview

The Fundamental of Human Genetics and Genomics unit is a subject-specific lecture based module in the MSc Genomic Medicine programme. This unit will provide essential and contemporary knowledge relating to genomic science and genetic disease. The unit consists of a mixture of e-learning modules, taught lectures and tutorials. The lectures will be delivered by a range of clinical and non-clinical academic staff, many of whom are internationally recognised experts in their field. This is a Core unit attended by students from a number of different Programmes.

Aims

The aim of this module is to prepare students to understand the role of genomics in disease. This module will serve as a foundation for those wishing to complete further modules from the Genomic Medicine portfolio. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, you should be able to:-

  1. Describe the structure and function of DNA, genes and chromosomes.
  2. Explain the regulation of gene expression, transcription and translation.
  3. Interpret structural and sequence variation in the context of physiological function and disease.
  4. Critically compare the range of inheritance patterns seen in genetic disorders.
  5. Select and justify appropriate methods for identifying disease-causing variants and chromosomal abnormalities. 

Teaching and learning methods

The course contains 10 hours e-lectures, 5 hours face-to-face lectures, 3 tutorial type of  learning sessions, and 2 hourworkshop.
