The Orientation Programme will help you settle into your new life here quickly and easily.
To help you settle in during your first few days in Manchester we offer a comprehensive programme of orientation events that will provide you with valuable information, as well as giving you the opportunity to meet other students. The programme is organised by staff from the International Office, but it also involves student helpers from the University – our Purple People – who will be available to support you and answer any questions you may have.
Previous orientation events and services have included:
In September we offer an Airport Collection Service from Manchester Airport for students who are arriving on their own and living in University accommodation. Our Purple People also run helpdesks in University accommodation to welcome you and help you settle in.
University staff will be available across campus to provide individual guidance on registration, take payment of fees and give you your student ID card. Our Purple People also run an IT helpdesk to offer assistance with online registration, accessing emails and setting up social networking.
After a welcome from the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, staff from support services, the Students' Union, security services and the International Society offer useful advice on settling into University life in the UK. There are also opportunities to ask questions in smaller groups during workshops.
Take a coach tour of Manchester with a qualified guide and discover the vibrant past, present and future of the city you'll be calling home. Then take a walk around the campus with current students who will show you all of the important places you'll need to know.
Find out from our Purple People what it's really like to live in Manchester: the best places to eat, the phone networks that give you the best deals, which bus to take to the city centre, where to play your favourite sport or anything else you want to know! You can even try the classic English passtime of croquet.
Orientation is a great time to meet new people from all over the world before you start your studies together, and whatever you're into, there's a social event for you. Last year hundreds of arriving students enjoyed street dancing, karaoke, a traditional Scottish ceilidh dance and the ever-popular World Quiz. The last night
orientation party is always a great way to have fun with new friends.
