This programme is for students whose first language is not English, and is particularly suitable for students from Japan, China and Korea. It is similar to the standard study abroad option, except that you also undertake a period of English language study with us before your main year/semester academic programme.
You will undertake an intensive five- or ten-week period of non-credit-bearing English language study (known as a pre-sessional course) prior to undertaking your main academic programme. The course enables you to develop your academic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This pathway is a good option for students whose current English language score is only just below the University's English language entry requirement for the standard study abroad and exchange programmes.
The pathway allows you to undertake a full year of academic course units (plus an additional five or ten weeks) or a single semester of academic course units (plus an additional five or ten weeks). You therefore pay the standard study abroad tuition fee for either the full year or single semester (this fee is waived for exchange students), plus an additional fee for the five- or ten-week English language pre-sessional course (this fee applies to both study abroad and exchange students).
The entry requirement for the five- or ten-week pre-sessional course is IELTS 5.5 with not less than 5.0 in writing. We also accept equivalent scores in TOEFL, Pearson Test of English and Cambridge Secure English Language Tests. The course takes place in the University Language Centre at The University of Manchester.
To apply for the Study Abroad with English Language Pathway, simply complete our standard application, selecting the relevant pathway on the online application form.
