Clare obtained a BSc (Hons) (1993) and PhD in Pharmacology (1990) from the University of Liverpool. Following this she took up a position as a post-doctoral research assistant in the Department of Physiology and obtained a British Heart Foundation Fellowship in 1994. She took up a position as a Lecturer in Medicine in 1995 before being promoted to Senior Lecturer.

Clare is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and the Director of Postgraduate Research Education for the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. Although she is an active researcher (currently holdihng grants from MRC, BHF, NC3R and BBSRC) she plays a major role in the development and management of teaching and learning. She has led two sucessful bids to the British Heart Foundation (award>£5M) to allow establishment of a prestigious fully funded 4 year PhD Programme  of which she is Programme Director. She established an MRes in Cardiovascular Health and Disease and is also Programme Director (co) for this. Clare has a long standing interest in medical education and has been involved in the support and development of Personal and Professional Development Portfolios since 2005. She is now a Deputy Lead for this programme. Externally Clare is currently external examiner for an MRes at the University of Newcastle and has previoulsy acted in this capacity for a BSc programme at the University of Liverpool. Clare has previously been a Lay Advisor for Mersey Deanery.
