Biography

I have an intensive role in teaching on the Masters Programme in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry in collaboration with Healthcare Learning (Formerly Smile-on). I am also an Examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and an invited lecturer on occlusion and implant dentistry at a number of institutes and international conferences.

Having graduated from Damascus in 1997, I completed my specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, then moved to Newcastle University (UK) and completed my PhD in the field of occlusion and TMD In 2007. I was then appointed a Clinical Fellow in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle Dental School, and later became the Lead for the Crown and Bridge course until 2011 when I received a prestigious scholarship from the ITI (International Team for Implantology, Switzerland) to pursue clinical training in Implantology at the ITI Centre at Belgrade University.

My research has been recognised by 3 prestigious international awards (IADR in the USA, ICOT in Australia and BSRD in the UK). I am currently reviewer for a number of international journals including: J Oral Rehabilitation, J of Dentistry, J Orofacial Pain, and editor for the journal of Oral Health and Dental Management.

I was recently awarded the Dentistry Award 2015 at the Asian Professionals Award, which was presented by Dr Catherine Brady of the GDC (General Dental Council). The award is was one of 10 winners out of just under 4,000 nominations and votes received for the annual awards that pay tribute to inspirational individuals from the Asian community who contribute in every conceivable sector of national life. Teaching

An intensive research-led teaching role, which involves the supervision of over 20 research projects on the MSc programme in Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry. Each project aims to develop an original RCT protocol (roughly 10,000 words) that can be undertaken in a primary or secondary care setting. The protocols are designed to meet the CONSORT criteria. The students are from different dental schools worldwide, with a wide variation in clinical and research knowledge. 60% of my students achieved a Distinction grade for their dissertation, and another 30% received a Merit.

I co-deliver the clinical skills training for treatment planning, occlusion, and implantology for HealthCareLearning residential courses in collaboration with Manchester University.

Co-deliver the Research Methods course, that is delivered to 180 students from different disciplines across the Medical and Dental Schools. The course teaches essential research skills such as critical analysis, citation and plagiarism, research ethics, study design in different settings (experimental (RCT), observational and epidemiological) as well as evidence-based practice in dentistry/medicine.
