General requirements for undergraduate courses
The University of Manchester welcomes applications from holders of the Vitnemal - videregaende opplaering (generell studiekompetanse). Entry requirements vary across Schools, but in general we will be looking for grades of 5.0 and 6.0 in relevant subjects, and a minimum of 4.5 overall excluding extra points.

General requirements for postgraduate/research courses
A bachelor's degree at grades A-C from a recognised institution will be considered for entry to postgraduate study. For PhD programmes requiring detailed previous subject knowledge, a master's degree at grades A-C may also be required.
English language requirements
Evidence of English language proficiency is required for meeting both the requirements of the Tier 4 (student) visa and the University of Manchester’s academic requirements. English language requirements vary by course but are usually the equivalent of:
- IELTS 5.5–6.5 for foundation courses
- IELTS 6.0–7.0 for Bbachelor’s courses
- IELTS 6.5–7.5 for postgraduate programmes
The University also accepts other English language tests such as: Pearson Test of English (PTE), Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE). For further information please visit our English language requirements page.
Depending on the course, IGCSE or IB English Language may be accepted.
Some Schools ask that the appropriate score has been met before you apply for a course. Other departments give conditional offers subject to applicants achieving our general entry requirement level of English language proficiency before starting the course.
