International students

If you are an international student applying for a master’s at Manchester, there may be additional entry requirements that you need to consider before applying.

English language requirements for master’s courses

English language requirements vary by course and department but are usually the equivalent of IELTS 6.0–7.0.

Some departments ask that the appropriate score has been met before you apply for a course while other departments give conditional offers subject to applicants achieving our general entry requirement level of English language proficiency before starting the course.

For most international students who have not achieved a grade C or above in GCSE, IGCSE, or O-level English, you must demonstrate your English proficiency through a secure and approved testing system, such as IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson or Cambridge ESOL.

These internationally recognised assessments of English language proficiency are designed to determine the ability of non-native speakers of English who intend to study or train in English. IELTS, for example, is accepted by most British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions. It is also accepted by many professional organisations, such as the UK General Medical Council. Minimum requirements vary across postgraduate courses. It is important that you check with your prospective School for the English language requirements for your intended course.

We do accept some other testing systems for individual countries. Read our country-specific information to see if this applies to your country.

To identify a suitable testing centre in your home country for IELTS or TOEFL, please contact your local British Council office. Alternatively, you can find information on the IELTS and ETS (for information on TOEFL) websites.

Other entry requirements

Some master’s courses have additional entry requirements such as previous work experience, submission of written work with the application or previous study of a particular subject.

Departments sometimes have different entry requirements so it is important to check the individual master’s course information before you apply.

General master’s entry requirements by country

There may be specific master’s entry requirements for students from your country. Read our country-specific information to see if this applies to you.
