The unit will include all aspects of endodontic treatment, both surgical and non-surgical treatment. Students will also be expected to go into detail of diagnosis and treatment planning. Some aspects of general restorative care and treatment planning will also be assessed.
'Applied Endodontics' aims to provide each participant with a comprehensive experience and training in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of endodontic disease. Furthermore, the assessment and treatment planning elements will incorporate aspects of other relevant dental disciplines.The unit will also aim to not only develop clinical abilities but also to stimulate critical and analytical thinking in both the clinical and research environment.
On successful complketion of the unit, students will be able to:

understand the role of non surgical and surgical endodontic therapy for treatment of endodntic disease;

understand the influence that the patient’s general health may have on the use of non surgical and surgical therapy;

demonstrate knowledge to practice effective non surgical and surgical therapy, communicating with both specialist and non-specialist colleagues;

demonstrate knowledge of general restorative care and the restoration of the endodontically treated tooth;

understand limitations, benefits and risks of methods of non surgical and surgical endodontic therapy;

recognise own limitations, reflect on experiences and appreciate the need to continuing education;

appreciate the concept of multidisciplinary care of patients and teamwork;

undertake safe and effective non surgical endodontic therapy.
