Open day sessions and activities
Choosing where to study for the next few years of your life is a difficult decision. Attending an open day will provide you with a great opportunity to look at The University of Manchester and discover what it's really like to be a student at one of the UK's leading research intensive universities.
By attending one of our open days we hope you will find out that, although our University may be big, our campus is compact and friendly. It has everything that you need to get the most out of your studies and your free time, with the bright lights of Manchester, Britain's number one student city, only a few minutes away.
At each open day you will be able to gain a real insight into the student experience and life at The University of Manchester. You will have the opportunity to find out more about courses you are interested in, meet current students and staff of the University, and attend sessions on key student issues such as accommodation and student finance. Sessions and activities available include:
Student Experience Exhibition
In the Whitworth Hall you will find the main Student Experience Exhibition, where you can pick up information about the University’s main student services. These include the Careers Service, the Student Services Centre (covering student finance), the Accommodation Office, the Disability Support Office, the Library and the Study Abroad Unit.
Subject-specific sessions and exhibition stands
One of the most important aspects of your visit will be gathering information about the course or courses that you are considering applying for. The sessions on offer may include: a presentation; a formal or informal talk; a question-and-answer session; a demonstration; and, in some cases, a tour of facilities.
We recommend that you plan your day around the subject sessions you would like to attend. Most of the sessions are held more than once throughout the day. Some sessions require visitors to book a place in advance, while others allocate places on a first-come-first-served basis. Our open days are usually very busy and some sessions are very popular so we do advise that you arrive early. Where sessions are very full we may need to limit entry to one student plus one guest, or even to students only.
In addition to subject-specific sessions, visitors can visit the relevant academic school stand situated around the campus, where a member of staff or student ambassador will be able to help with questions about your chosen subject area.
General information sessions
A series of general information sessions are organised to provide information on what you can expect as a student at The University of Manchester. Please note that many of these talks are very popular, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. For very popular talks, we may limit attendance to one student and one guest, or students only.
General talks include 'Introducing Manchester, the University and our Accommodation', 'Student Finance' and 'Student Life'.
Throughout the day there will be the opportunity for visitors to go on a walking tour of the campus. These tours operate on a first-come-first-served basis, and take in the University’s South Campus. As they are very popular, guests may be required to queue (outside) at peak times throughout the day.
Please note that our open days do not include the chance to see inside a hall of residence or student bedroom. In March each year, the Accommodation Office hosts an open house when each of the University's undergraduate halls of residence are open to prospective students and their families. Further information about this event can be found on the Accommodation Office website.
