Tuition fee concessions
The University offers a number of tuition fee concessions for applicants in particular circumstances.
These concessions are administered on a discretionary basis by the Tuition Fee Assessment team after a full review of the information provided by the applicant on the Tuition Fee Assessment form and supporting documentation.
Eligibility
The following tuition fee concessions are available to:
Undergraduate
- Full-time undergraduate applicants to all courses except MBChB and BDS courses are eligible.
Postgraduate
- Full-time, non-clinical Postgraduate applicants (taught and Research) are eligible.
Those applicants who are asylum seekers, children of asylum seekers, or unaccompanied asylum-seeking children may be eligible to pay the Home rate of tuition fee rate. To be eligible you must meet specific criteria. On the first day of the first academic year of your course your asylum claim must be under consideration by the Home Office and we have received proof that the claim for asylum was submitted before you made your application to UCAS/The University of Manchester. Evidence to be provided is normally the original Standard Acknowledgement Letter, or a NASS card issued by the Home Office.
Please note if you meet the above criteria, you will be classified as an Overseas student but allowed to pay the Home rate of fee. If your asylum case is decided before registration or during your course of study at the University, your fee status will change to Home with effect from the next academic year and the tuition fee bursary will cease if:
- Either you, your parents, or your spouse/civil partner are recognised as a refugee by the UK Government, and you have been ordinarily resident in the UK since you were granted this immigration status. If you are the spouse/civil partner of a refugee, you must have been the spouse/civil partner on the date that the application was made. If you are the child/stepchild of a refugee, you must be aged under 18 on the date that the asylum application was made. You must also have been the child/stepchild of the person recognised as a refugee on the date the asylum application was made.
- As a result of an asylum application you, your parents, or your spouse/civil partner are granted Humanitarian Protection in the UK and you have been ordinarily resident in the UK since you were granted this immigration status. If you are the spouse/civil partner of a person granted Humanitarian Protection in the UK, you must have been the spouse/civil partner on the date that the asylum application was made. If you are the child/stepchild of a person granted Humanitarian Protection, you must be aged under 18 on the date that the asylum application was made. You must also have been the child/stepchild of the person recognised as a refugee on the date the asylum application was made.
- If you are granted some other form of immigration status as a result of the case decision, your Overseas fee status may not change, but the Home fee bursary may stop, and the Overseas fee applied.
On the first day of the first academic year of the course those applicants who have been granted Leave to Remain (not refugee) as the result of being an asylum-seeking child (arriving to the UK alone) will be eligible to pay the Home rate of tuition fee.
On the first day of the first academic year of the course those applicants who hold Discretionary Leave to Remain in the UK as a result of an asylum application who meet the academic programme requirements and the eligibility criteria will be eligible to pay the Home rate of tuition fee. However, if you are granted some other form of immigration status before registration or during your course of study, your Overseas fee status may not change, but the Home fee bursary may stop and the Overseas fee applied.
Please note if you meet the above criteria, you will be classified as an Overseas student but allowed to pay the Home rate of fee. However, if your immigration status changes before registration or during your course of study at the University, your fee status may change with effect from the next academic year and the tuition fee bursary may cease.
On the first day of the first academic year of the course those applicants who are:
- under the age of 18 and have lived in the UK throughout the seven-year period preceding the first day of the first academic year of the course; or
- aged 18 years old or above and, preceding the first day of the first academic year of the course, have lived in the UK throughout either half your life or a period of twenty years.
Your residence in the UK must not have been wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education. Unlike the national regulations for fee status, the three years prior to the start of the course do not have to have been lawful residence, for example immigration status to remain in the UK may not have been granted to cover the whole period. When considering a student for this concession, our Tuition Fee Assessment team will normally require evidence of continuous residence in the UK such as letters from your schools confirming your dates of enrolment.
