Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview

We require a UK Honours degree with a First or Upper Second (2.1) classification or the overseas equivalent in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geography or a related discipline.

Graduates in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics or Engineering related disciplines are also welcome.

When assessing your academic record we take into account the grades you have achieved and the standing of the institution where you studied your qualification.

English language

This programme accepts successful completion of the 6 and 10 Week Pre-sessional English Language course. We accept the following qualifications which must be valid on the start date of the Master's course.

IELTS UKVI or Academic: 6.0 Overall with 6.0 in Writing, no more than one sub-skill at 5.5 and no other sub-skill below 6.0

English language test validity

Some English Language test results are only valid for two years. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the Master's course.

Fees and funding

Fees

Fees for entry in 2027 have not yet been set. For reference, the fees for the academic year beginning September 2026 were as follows:

  • MSc (full-time)
    UK students (per annum): £15,200
    International, including EU, students (per annum): £33,600

The fees quoted above are fully inclusive of tuition, administration and computational costs.

Fees for entry are subject to yearly review. The University reserves the right to increase your tuition fee by up to 7% each year for courses lasting more than one year, including to reflect rising costs associated with delivering our educational and wider student experience. International student CAS deposit

Self-funded international applicants are required to pay a deposit of £2500 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. Some applicants will be required to pay a higher deposit. More information on tuition fee deposits .

Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. How to apply

Staged admissions

As there is a high demand for our courses, we operate a staged admissions process with selection deadlines throughout the year.

Due to the competition for places and high quality of applications that we receive, we give preference to students from high-ranking institutions and with grades above our minimum entry requirements.

Please ensure you submit all supporting documentation with your application before the application deadline to avoid a delay in processing.

•Stage 1: Application received by 06 December 2026 - Application update by 19 February 2027

•Stage 2: Application received by 01 March 2027 - Application update by 02 May 2027

•Stage 3: Application received by 04 May 2027 - Application update by 18 June 2027

While we aim to give you a decision on your application by the deadline date, in some instances due to the competition for places and the volume of applications received, it may be necessary to roll your application forward to the next deadline date.

Applications received after our final selection deadline will be considered at our discretion if places are still available.

Please note, all places are subject to availability and if you apply at one of the later stages, some courses may already be reaching capacity or be closed to further applications. We, therefore, recommend that you apply early in the cycle to avoid disappointment.

Advice to applicants

  • copies of official degree certificatesand transcripts of your previous study, showing the subjects taken and grades obtained. Ifthese documents are in languages other than English, please provide official translations;

How your application is considered

Once your application has been received, our admissions team will contact you. We may ask you to submit additional information, if necessary.

Applications for MSc Geographical Information Science are very competitive. Due to the high demand for the programme we may not be able to offer places to all applicants who have the entry qualifications that we require. If we are unable to consider you for an offer you may be placed on a waiting list. Candidates on a waiting list will only be considered for an offer if places become available.

Please note, the course may reach capacity before the official closing date, so all students are advised to apply as soon as possible.

Returning to education

Return-to-learn students are those who have had a substantial period away from any formal learning. Often such learners have pursued careers or raised a family.

We understand that students come from many different backgrounds, with varying qualifications, careers and skills, but they often bring to their studies a high degree of motivation and experience.

We recognise that standard selection measures and procedures may not enable these learners to demonstrate fully their suitability for their chosen course.

Where appropriate, admissions officers will seek and consider alternative evidence in order to give such learners equivalent consideration. Where they deem this alternative evidence meets entry criteria fully, the learner will not be required to meet the standard academic entry requirements.

Deferrals

Applications for deferred entry are not accepted for this course. If you receive an offer and wish to be considered for the following year of entry, you will need to place a new application. Please, be aware, there is no guarantee of receiving another offer, and offer conditions are subject to change in line with entry requirements. 

Re-applications

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry. 

In your new application, you should demonstrate how your application has improved. We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course.

Geospatial technologies are transforming the way we understand and interact with the world around us.  The MSc Geographical Information Science (GIS) provides advanced training in the theory, methods and applications of geographical information science (GIS). You will explore how spatial data can be collected, managed, analysed and communicated to understand geographical and environmental processes and support evidence-based decision-making.

This programme combines GIS, spatial analysis, remote sensing, geospatial data acquisition, modelling, data visualisation and software development (both commercial and open-source). You will develop both the conceptual understanding and technical capabilities needed to work with complex spatial datasets and address geographical questions across different scales and sectors.

What you will study

The programme will develop your knowledge progressively, from core principles of geographical information science to advanced analytical and research methods.

Led by experts in environmental, ecological, and social applications of GIS, you’ll explore how GIS is used across a wide range of sectors, from environmental management and data science to urban sustainability and planning.

Flexible and applied learning experience

As part of the applied study unit, you will have opportunities for work experience and collaboration with leading local and national organisations, potentially shaping your dissertation research and professional direction.

The MSc GIS also includes a fully funded residential field course, in which you will gain skills in geospatial data acquisition, including use of unmanned aerial vehicles, surveying, participatory GIS, and other advanced methods, and where you’ll work collaboratively with your peers to apply your knowledge to real-world issues in the fields of energy, ecology, and conservation. In doing so, you will develop expertise in primary data collection, processing, and visualisation which are highly sought after by employers.

During your studies you will have access to a world-class geocomputational laboratory, enabling ambitious and computationally demanding work in GIS, Remote Sensing, and related fields, with access to high-performance computing, networks, and machine learning servers. You will also have access to university computer laboratories, licenses for proprietary software, and training from GIS technical specialists who will support and enhance your learning.

Special features

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is coursework-based and includes a variety of assessment types, such as project reports, essays, programming tasks, and research posters. This will enable you to gain a hands-on experience of applying geographical information science skills to real-world applications. 

The dissertation, based on an original research project or design of your choice, accounts for 60 credits. Dissertation topics can focus on aspects of geographical information science (GIS) and are supported by researchers who specialise in core areas of GIS, remote sensing, or modelling. The remaining 120 credits are based on eight 15-credit course units (four in each semester).

Facilities

As datasets and models increase in size and complexity, from hyperspectral remote sensing imagery through to large language models, our ability to process and analyse them is increasingly dependent on computational power. Recent investment has led to the development of the Geography geocomputational laboratory, a world-class resource that is available to both researchers and students alike. During your studies you will have access to high-performance computing, networks, and machine learning servers, with training and support from GIS technical specialists and academic staff in the Mapping, Computing and Geographical Information Science ( MCGIS ) research group. These resources are made available to support ambitious and computationally demanding research, for example as part of your dissertation, enabling you to tackle research questions and focus on real-world problems that would be impossible to address using typical processing capabilities.

You will also have access to a wide range of equipment, including mobile devices, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), real-time kinematic global navigational satellite systems (RTK-GNSS), environmental sensor networks, and more, as well as licenses for industry-standard proprietary software, equipping you for a future career in research or industry.

Dissertations can be based on secondary data analysis, or can involve primary data collection e.g., using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Participatory GIS, or other techniques.
