Healthier Futures has an exciting opportunity for an academic to support its leadership team in enhancing curriculum and skills development.  

Platforms have been the University of Manchester’s strategic mechanism for driving challenge-led, interdisciplinary research across our full breadth of disciplines. They embody our ‘One University’ ethos — convening diverse teams from all three Faculties and enabling them to imagine, create and deliver solutions to society’s most urgent challenges. 

As part of our M2035 vision, the platforms will now be working to apply these interdisciplinary approaches to inform teaching, learning and skills, and to make opportunities available to students and learners to engage with real world challenges.

About Healthier Futures

Healthier Futures’ mission is to reduce health inequalities by mobilising interdisciplinary research, including driving its impact into teaching and curricula, to promote better health and wellbeing for all. We focus on the wider social determinants of health: the unfair and avoidable conditions that shape people’s health, alongside the ways in which access to health and social care can increase or reduce these inequalities. Our research across the University covers local, national and global perspectives, with a view to addressing health inequalities wherever our insights can make a difference.

We work with partners across academia, policy and practice, business, and communities. Together, we build inclusive partnerships to understand and tackle health inequalities. Like the other Platforms, Healthier Futures connects, drives and amplifies interdisciplinary collaborations, bringing people and organisations together, supporting partnership, enabling innovation, and helping research to make an impact.

In exciting developments, we are now moving to also support the development of teaching, learning and skills, so that students, staff and partners can develop the knowledge and capabilities needed to reduce health inequalities.

Curriculum and Skills Development Lead

The Healthier Futures theme lead for Curriculum and Skills Development (CSD) will work closely with Co-Directors, Professor Dame Nicky Cullum and Professor Sarah Marie Hall and other theme leads (focused on Healthier Lives, Healthier Places and Healthier Systems), to provide a direct link into teaching and learning, and to connect Healthier Futures both internally and externally to pedagogical opportunities. By bridging research, teaching and action, we will cultivate not only knowledge but also the practical competencies and professional capacities needed to engage with real-world challenges. 

The CSD theme lead will be initially focused on scoping the opportunities for the platform to support a wide range of activities, which might include (but not be restricted to) considering how we can:

• Contribute to interdisciplinary curricula and skills provision.
• Support provision for learners at all stages, from summer schools through to micro-credentialled teaching.
• Strengthen our UG, PGT and PGR experience through challenge-based and partner-engaged/enabled learning.
• Attract global talent inspired by our engaged interdisciplinary culture. 

 We would be keen to hear from candidates where they see the most compelling opportunities might lie.

 The successful candidate will develop this stream of work, liaising with colleagues across the University to build new activities to enhance teaching, learning and skills in relation to health inequalities.

 This role will cut across all three faculties. We understand that candidates will come with perspectives from their own faculty, but they should also be prepared to engage with the other faculties and explore how we can support curriculum and skills across all disciplines.

The CSD lead will be a member of the Healthier Futures Management Board, alongside the other thematic leads for the Platform. They will be expected to contribute to the wider activities of the Platform, and also to work closely with the skills leads across the other three Platforms, Creative Manchester, Digital Futures and Sustainable Futures.

Time allocation 

The workload allocation for this leadership position is set at 0.2 FTE, for 3 years. Candidates are expected to discuss their application with their Departmental or Divisional Head, who should provide a simple statement of support via email, confirming their awareness of the job description and support for the application and associated time commitment. Please note this is an internal opportunity.
