Professor Yang Dong, Dean of Renmin University of China Law School and Dr Li Xiuqi, Director of the Training and Alumni Office, Renmin University of China Law School visited the Manchester China Institute (MCI) on Friday 9 October 2026 to explore opportunities for partnership between the two institutions. Professor Yang and his colleagues were welcomed by Professor Lei Chen, MCI Director and Chair of Comparative Law, and Ms Yannan Yu, the project manager of MCI at The University of Manchester.

The visit provided an opportunity to consider how Renmin’s strengths in legal scholarship could complement MCI’s interdisciplinary research on China. The discussions centred on developing closer institutional connections and exploring a sustained academic relationship that supports research and knowledge exchange.

A future partnership could create opportunities for joint research, seminars, academic visits and engagement between early-career scholars. Bringing researchers together around shared questions would support substantive comparative analysis and a deeper understanding of China’s evolving legal landscape.

For MCI, the visit reflects its commitment to advancing understanding between Britain and China through research, education and public engagement. Closer connections with Renmin would strengthen the Institute’s international academic network and help connect legal scholarship with wider debates about China’s economy, society and governance.
