Summary
  • Manchester remains eighth in the UK in new rankings.
  • The University is 60th globally.
  • The result follows stronger domestic rankings.

Manchester has been ranked eighth in the UK for another year whilst falling slightly by four places to 60 overall in the world in the latest 2027 rankings of 2,297 universities. Its overall score is 74.8, a marginal decrease of 0.1 points compared with the previous year.

It follows progress in the latest domestic league tables, with Manchester rising 15 places to 20th in the Guardian University Guide 2027 and being named Northwest University of the Year in The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

The results come as the University begins to implement Manchester 2035, its ten-year strategy to strengthen excellence in teaching, learning and research. It also underlines the need to improve Manchester’s international position in an increasingly competitive global higher education environment.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, said: “Manchester remains one of the UK’s leading universities, but we recognise that our global position has declined and that we need to improve.

“Manchester 2035 sets out how we will build on our strengths, raise the quality and consistency of our teaching and research and translate more of our discoveries into benefits for society. This will take sustained effort across the University, but we have a clear strategy and a strong foundation from which to make progress.”

Professor Colette Fagan, Vice-President for Research of The University of Manchester, said: “The recent suite of university rankings are a useful gauge for us as we begin to put our strategy into practice.

“By bringing together outstanding research, new ideas and partnerships, Manchester makes a substantial positive difference to communities locally, nationally and globally.

“Rankings don’t measure everything we value, or everything universities contribute to society. But they do give us a useful indication of where we can keep improving. I’m grateful for the continuing hard work of colleagues across the University and for their commitment to our students, our research and the communities we serve.”

The Times Higher Education assessment looks at universities across teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
