The Faculty of Humanities is set to host its second event as a British Academy lecture hub.

On Tuesday, 2 May 2023 the University will welcome Colin Adams, Professor of ancient history at the University of Liverpool.

His lecture, titled “The Elephant in the Room”: Understanding Corruption in Roman Egypt is part of the annual British Academy Lectures series, which brings some of the world’s leading humanities and social science scholars to universities across the UK.

Drawing on evidence from the papyri of Roman Egypt, Professor Adams will explore the everyday experiences of the inhabitants of this Roman province who were at the mercy of corrupt officials and abusive representatives of the state. The lecture will examine what form corruption took in the province, what societal factors encouraged it, how private individuals coped, and what anti-corruption initiatives were taken by the Roman state.

Professor Adams will also consider how modern sociological and anthropological discourse may improve our understanding of ancient corruption and allows for the development of a nuanced understanding of its effects on society. This lecture promises to be a fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of a topic that is still relevant today.

Following Professor Adams’ lecture, we are delighted to welcome Dr Campbell Price, Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum, for a brief talk and collection encounter with the ‘Golden Mummies of Egypt’ exhibition. Following this will be an audience Q+A with Professor Adams and Dr Price and a drinks reception.

Tickets for this event are free but must be booked in advance. The lecture will be hosted at The Whitworth Gallery with doors opening at 5pm.
