Expanding opportunities to learn

We’ll make it easy to learn and work on and off campus. Manchester Online will expand access to higher education and let us trial new models for learning and collaboration.

We’ll build digital skills for all, tackle digital poverty and use AI responsibly to ensure technology empowers rather than excludes.

“I can teach the way I always wanted to: in-person time for deeper work, hands-on experience for students, and clear support.”
Sophie Nicholson, Lecturer in Creative Writing

Inclusive, practical and people-led digitisation

Collaborative digital environments

Building on our history as the birthplace of modern computing, we’re creating digital environments where students and colleagues can do their best work and stay connected across campus and beyond.

Technology will enhance belonging, create flexible spaces for collaboration and widen access to a Manchester education worldwide. From smarter, simpler services to AI that frees up time for meaningful work and accelerates research breakthroughs, our approach will be ethical, people-led and sustainable.

In practice

Over the next ten years

We'll make our education available worldwide, helping people to feel part of Manchester wherever they are, and upholding our commitment to digital equity.

Take an integrated approach to investment in our digital and physical campus

Join up our digital and physical campus through a new masterplan for sustainable, accessible spaces and systems.

Expand Manchester Online to connect learners locally and globally and test new learning models.

Make everyday tasks easier with connected, inclusive services that replace fragmented systems.

Use AI to improve and enhance

AI and automation will enhance, not replace, teaching, support and decision-making.

Take an ethical, transparent approach to how these tools are designed and used that considers environmental impact.

Harness intelligent tools to open new possibilities for research as well as learning.

Build a digitally capable community

Empower our community with the training and support to use digital tools confidently.

Embed digital skills into curricula and career development for every role.

Tackle digital poverty – ensuring everyone has the tools and connectivity they need.
