The University of Manchester Library is delighted to invite teaching staff, Library colleagues and students to the launch of The AI Crisis in Higher Education: A Strategic Proposal, a new Open Educational Resource (OER) by Dr Mark Carrigan, Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience (Digital Education) in the Humanities Dean's Office and Senior Lecturer in Education at the Manchester Institute of Education.

About the publication

In this timely and thought-provoking publication, Mark explores the challenges and opportunities that AI presents, and offers a strategic proposal to one of the most significant transformations facing the higher education sector.

Readers around the world can read the book for free on Pressbooks, demonstrating Manchester 2035’s commitment to sharing knowledge globally.

Event details and registration

The launch event will take place in the Muriel Stott building in Main Library on Tuesday 13 October 2026 at 1pm to 2pm. It will include a panel discussion where colleagues from the University, including the Library’s Jennie Blake, will discuss this important resource.

The event will be filmed, and the recording will be made available on YouTube afterwards. Places are limited, and registration is required.

Advancing Open Education at Manchester

This publication marks an important milestone for the Library's Imagine 2035 anchor project, Flip to Open, which has been exploring ways to reduce reliance on commercial textbooks by supporting the creation and adoption of OER. Over the next few months, the Teaching Collections team will be transitioning this project into a new service offer which aims to support teaching staff across the University to publish and adopt OER through our new OER Programme.
