Laverne's story

• Race, Migration and Humanitarianism: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism in the Modern World – a new MA module was developed in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures in response to the Race Matters Report and our History Department’s efforts to respond to the Royal Historical Society’s Race, Ethnicity & Equality Report by better embedding equality and diversity considerations into teaching and learning practices.
• Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership – an online database of Britons who were compensated through public funds for the loss of their enslaved labour force after Emancipation in 1834.
• Explore how we’re addressing modern slavery through our research and in our own operations.
• Research into exploitation in the modern textiles and fashion industry
• Our social responsibility website outlines the major programmes we have today that are dedicated to social good. These include addressing inequalities in Greater Manchester; how we’re supporting employment in the city; and delivering the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
•  New research project, Cottonopolis, seeks to unravel the socio-environmental legacies of industrial cotton production in Manchester.
• Our widening participation work seeks to address patterns of underrepresentation in higher education, including attracting individuals from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds.

This is a significant and wide-ranging topic and we have many other researchers, students and professional services staff working on many areas that touch on inequality.
