Better World Showcase 2019

The Better World Showcase, the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s social responsibility awards, took place on Wednesday 6 February in the Great Hall. The event celebrated staff and students who are ‘making a difference’ through projects which benefit society or the environment. The event was hosted by Professor Martin Schröder, Dean of the Faculty, and Rachel Brealey, Director of Faculty Operations, who praised the number and variety of projects and the commitment of those involved to social responsibility.

Saralees Nadarajah and Martin Wiegand were among the winners in the 'Outstanding contribution to equality, diversity and inclusion' category for their work on 'Educate Africa'. They also won the People's vote, an additional award voted by staff and students from across the University.

Demi Allen, Charles Eaton, Helena Stage and Alex Watson were highly commended in the 'Outstanding public engagement initiative' category for ther work on 'Whitworth Mathematics and Art Primary Masterclasses'.

Demi Allen, Abigail Bown, Catherine Bruce, Elizabeth Buckingham-Jeffrey and Louise Walker have been nominated in the 'Outstand contribution to equality, diversity and inclusion' category for their work in the 'Women in Mathematics research' event.

In the 'Outstanding volunteer' catagory, Team Uganda team was nominated for their Team Unganda project and Marianthi Moschou was nonminated for her work in STEM Outreach.
