Dr Elaine Dewhurst’s work on age discrimination achieves recognition and publication

Dr Elaine Dewhurst, Senior Lecturer in Employment Law and MICRA affiliate, authored a report on Age Discrimination outside the Employment field, which was been published by the European Commission in November 2020 (with summaries in French and German).

The report provides an analysis of the current law at regional and national level within the EU on the issue of age discrimination in the fields of social protection, education, housing, healthcare and access to goods and services.

The work looks set to have a significant impact - Elaine was invited to deliver two workshops for the European Law Equality Network on her findings and has also been invited to an internal meeting at the European Commission to discuss her findings with some key stakeholders.

One of these workshops was the Online Legal Seminar 2020 held by the European Equality Law Network for which Elaine is Senior Expert in Ageing. The workshop Elaine gave was on Age Equality Outside Employment.

The network was established by the European Commission to support its work by providing independent information and advice on relevant developments on equality law in the Member States. The network is managed by Human European Consultancy, the Migration Policy Group (MPG) and Utrecht University (UU) on behalf of the European Commission. A primary task of the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination is to provide reliable, expert information to enable the Commission to fulfil their role as guardian of the treaties.

Elaine also presented at an internal event at the European Commission entitled “Union of Equality: achievements and challenges ahead” on 8 December 2020. Elaine presented her report and discussed the connections between the work underway in the Commission on the Union of Equality.
