We are delighted to announce that between 22nd October to 13th November, the annual ESRC Festival of Social Sciences returns to Manchester for its 20th anniversary, with events taking place both virtually and in person. We will be showing some of the spectacular research conducted across the social sciences at The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford.

The ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of research and knowledge about humans and society and a key element of ESRC’s commitment to promote awareness of UK social science research to new audiences.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘My Local Area’ and for 2022 we have a special focus on the many ways in which social science research contributes to social, economic and political life across the City, region and beyond.

From big ideas to the most detailed observations, social science affects us all every day – at work, in school, when raising children, within our communities, from the personal and local, to the national and global level. The ESRC Festival of Social Science offers a fascinating insight into some of the country's leading social science research and how it influences our social, economic and political lives – both now and in the future.

Professor Dimitris Papadimitriou, Vice Dean of Social Responsibility said:

“We are excited about the 2022 Manchester ESRC Festival of Social Sciences! The Festival is one of the highlights of our public engagement calendar that connects first class scholarship with our local community in an accessible and fun way.

This year’s programme has something for everybody and we hope that people of all ages will join our events to find out how we can learn from one another and make a positive contribution towards a better world”.
