Alex Dakin.A University of Manchester Music student has won the Royal Northern Sinfonia Young Composers’ competition.

Alex Dakin (Year 3) has won with his work for chamber orchestra, Firework Spirals.

His new work was premiered at the SAGE, Gateshead on 18 January 2019.

Alex says: "It was a real honour and privilege to have had my piece Firework Spirals premiered by the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

"The workshop was a great learning experience in the practicalities of writing for chamber orchestra, and it inspired some vital revisions to all of the shortlisted composers' works.

"All involved were accommodating and helpful, and the orchestra did a fantastic job with the pieces.

"I'd like to extend my thanks again to the orchestra, the conductor Jessica Cottis, and the panel: Martin Suckling, Erolyn Wallen, and Linda Buckley."
