MICRA Professor speaks at two international ageing conferences.

MICRA Professor Chris Phillipson has delivered plenary papers at two international conferences addressing themes relating to the development of age friendly cities and communities.

The first was to the Eurocities urban ageing working group who organised a conference, in association with Age Platform Europe and the World Health Organization, on the theme: 'Adapting European Cities to Population Ageing'.

Professor Phillipson reviewed in his paper some of the challenges facing European cities in responding to the diversities and inequalities affecting ageing populations. He outlined the basis of a new urban ageing agenda, built around collaboration with other social movements associated with 'healthy' and 'sustainable' cities, and with organisations representing older people themselves.

Professor Phillipson's second plenary was to the Fourth International Conference on Age-Friendly issues, organised by the Matia Gerontological Institute and organisations in the Basque Country.

The theme of the conference was developing new policies in the context of Covid-19. Professor Phillipson presented a paper exploring the basis of a 'recovery plan', geared around investing in low-income communities, challenging ageism, incorporating residential and nursing home care into age-friendly planning, and linking age-friendly issues to discussions about the future of cities.

Both conferences link closely with research programmes developed in the University, especially those associated with academics in the Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group.
