I graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1995. After five years in general practice I joined a contract research organisation. During this time I obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in pharmaceutical clinical research. I became Clinical Director and my role included acting as Investigator and clinical assessor for Oral Care studies, training of clinical assessors in ICH GCP and clinical indices, and the development of training/calibration programmes. I was also responsible for the internal communication of developments in regulatory and ethical affairs. I joined the University of Manchester in March 2007 to work alongside Professor Iain Pretty to assist on his Clinician Scientist Award.

Following my doctoral studies, I commenced specialty training in the field of Dental Public Health, working alongside consultants and commissioners in NHS England and Public Health England. During this time I obtained my MFDS and MDPH as well as obtaining my CCST having successfully completed the ISFE and awarded an FDS in Dental Pubic Health.

In 2015 I recieved a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (by recognition) and joined the Teaching Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

I am a specialist in Dental Public Health. My work is divided between teaching and research in the School of Dentistry and working in Dental Public Health service in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, where I am the Consultant in Dental Public Health and Professional Lead for Primary Dental Care Services.

I currently support Professor Pretty's team on CATFISH (Cumbria Assessment of Teeth – a Fluoride Intervention Study for Health) and the Public Health England water fluoridation surveillance project as an examiner trainer and photographic image assessor.

Previously I worked as a Senior Research Fellow alongside Professor Roger Ellwood and Professor Iain Pretty within the Dental Health Unit - a co-funded organization with Colgate Palmolive. I have completed a PhD in Community Dentistry/Dental Public Health under Professor Pretty on his NIHR Clinician Scientist Award delivering a series of research projects concerning the assessment of dental caries and enamel fluorosis in relation to community water fluoridation.
