Professor Paul O’Neill was the Head of the Manchester medical School 2006-10 and Deputy Dean FHMS, having been appointed as the first Professor of Medical Education at the University of Manchester in 2000. He is a consultant physician with clinical interests in geriatric and stroke medicine and is a Governor for the Foundation Trust where he works.  He is now the lead for the Doctor as Professional Theme in the MB ChB, supervises PhDs in education research and leads on a number of initiatives and projects for the MB ChB

 In recognition of his work in medical education, Paul received a National Teaching Fellowship in 2001. He established UMAP (Universities Medical Assessment Partnership), which was initially funded by a large FDTL-4 grant to set up a question bank between 5 medical schools.  This has now become the Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance.  Internationally, he is a member of Faculty for the Harvard-Macy medical educators programme (1997-).

Paul acts as an education consultant  and quality reviewer for schools around the world.  He was a specialist reviewer for the QAA and is a GMC team leader for quality assuring basic medical education.  In 2005, he led the successful University of Manchester £4.5M bid for a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning focused on enquiry-based learning..

From 2008, he has led the option appraisal, piloting and impmentation for the new selection system into the national Foundation Programme.  He sits on all the major committees concerned with Foundation training as the Medical Schools Council Representive.
