Manchester Bursary

The Manchester Bursary is available to students from low-income households and estranged students. Eligibility is automatically assessed based on your household income assessment through your Student Finance application.

The Bursary is available to eligible students for the duration of their course, subject to a financial reassessment each year.

If you're entitled to NHS support as a Nursing, Midwifery or Allied Healthcare course student (for example, Speech and Language Therapy), you won't be eligible for the Manchester Bursary. Medicine and Dentistry students are entitled to a lower level of NHS funding beyond Year 4 and are therefore eligible for the Manchester Bursary during the years they’re also entitled to NHS funding.

The amount you receive, is dependent upon your household income assessment.

Residual household income of up to £31,000: £2,600 cash award each year

Residual household income of between £31,001-£43,000: £1,300 cash award each year

Scheme eligibility

Essential criteria are criteria you must meet to be considered for this scheme. Students who do not meet this criteria will not be considered for this award. The essential criteria for this scheme are as follows:

  • You must be studying an eligible undergraduate degree course at the University of Manchester
  • You must have submitted an application to your regional student funding authority (Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland), had a full household income assessment, and consented to share your Student Finance information with your university
  • You must have a household income of less than £43,000 per year.

Students will NOT be eligible to receive the Manchester Bursary in any given academic year in which they are entitled to NHS support, with the exception of Medicine and Dentistry students who receive a lower level of funding when they become eligible for NHS support beyond year 4 of their academic programme.

Application and selection process

How to apply

The University will do an automatic assessment for the Manchester Bursary in the first 6-8 weeks of semester 1 and will email you in November if you are eligible for an award. You do not need to apply or provide any further information to us. If you are a continuing student, you will be assessed for the bursary regulations that are in place for your cohort.

If you are not contacted by December and think you are eligible for a bursary please email our team via the online enquiry form.

If your household income should fall by 15% or more in an academic year you may be able to apply for an in year reassessment with Student Finance to reassess your household income and thus your eligibility for the Manchester Bursary. You will not receive your bursary for the relevant academic year if your Student Finance assessment has not been completed by 31st May of that academic year. If you believe you are eligible for a bursary please contact us in advance of this deadline.

Terms and conditions

Sharing your household income information

When completing your Student Finance England Application, you will need to ensure you have selected the option to consent to share your household income information with the Universities you have applied to or hold an offer with. Without this we cannot access that information, and we will not be able to consider your application for this scheme.

Breaks in funding

This award is not provided during study years abroad, placement years, or if a student takes a study interruption.
